OLS Track Surges at the 42nd Annual Holy Trinity Invitational - May 7th-Oak Ridge Park
Building from their first meet two weeks ago, the team from Our Lady of Sorrows scored in every area of competition, scoring on the track from the 100 meters to the 1600 meters and in two of three field events. Single class events gave OLS athletes favorable opportunities to compete against their own age. Twelve teams competed.
In the 1600 meters, Nora D’Andrea opened with a 2nd place in the Girls 7th grade race, followed by Alfonso Dunmeyer’s 3rd and Joe Schmidt’s 5th in the Boys’ 7th grade. Despite an exhausting first lap, 3rdgrader, Kendrick Conway settled into a reasonable pace and grabbed 3rd in her first race of the season while Gianluca Ravano placed 2nd in the Boys 3rd grade 1600. The 800 meters was run in the hottest time of the day but Christopher Schmidt placed 2nd in the Boys’ 6th grade race, Millie Williams placed 4th in the Girls’ 7thGrade race and Anouk Lomuscio placed 3rd in the Girls’ 3rd Grade.
The 400 meters was an excellent event for OLS as Isabel Sabnekar won her second race this season, taking the Girls’ 8th grade race, while Alfonzo Dunmeyer took 2nd Rafael Dunmeyer 5th and Brendan McKeon 6th in the Boys 7th grade. Sean Navin took second in the Boys’ 6th Grade race. In his first race of the season 4th grader Miguel Aylward won, convincingly, by twenty meters. Kendrick appeared once again, placing third, and Fiona Lowe, 4th, in the Girls’ 3rd grade event while Griffin McShane rallied in the last fifty meters to place 3rd among the grade boys.
The short sprints, the 200 and 100 meters, had a few scorers, starting with Isabel Sabnekar’s 2nd in the Girls’ 7th Grade 200 meters. Sean Navin ran 3rd in the tight Boys’ 6th Grade while Gianluca Ravano placed 5thin the Boys’ third grade. The 100’s saw seventh grader Tai Gousse score 6th for the 7th Grade boys and Sam Ardayfio was 3rd in the Boys 3rd Grade race.
In the field, OLS had a terrific day led by the TurboJav throwers. Millie Williams scored again with a 6thin the 7th Grade event while her classmates in the boys’ event saw Raphael Dunmeyer grab 2nd, Brendan McKeon 4th, Joe Schmidt 5th and Tai Gousse 6th. Xander Russo and Lorenzo Torasso scored 4th and 6th in the Boys’ 5th Grade while Miguel Aylward won the Boys’ 4th Grade. In the Long Jump, Isabel Sabnekar added a bronze medal to her gold and silver when she placed 3rdin the 8th Grade event. Tai Gausse added yet another 6th place in the Boys’ 7th Grade event.
Small teams like OLS have problems filling relays but the 7th & 8th Grade girls scored a 6th place with Isabel Sabnekar, Christina Paul, Nia Pryor and Nora D’Andrea while the 7th & 8th Grade Boys combined Alfonso and Rafael Dunmeyer, Joe Schmidt and Tai Gousse for 3rd. The 5th & 6th Boys’ Relay with Sean Navin, Lorenzo Torasso, Christopher Schmidt and Miguel Aylward raced to a 30 meter win in the Boys 5th & 6th Grade Medley. The 3rd & 4th boys with Sam Ardafayio, Gianluca Ravano, Griffin McShane and Robert Lynch placed 3rd.
Overall, the boys placed 4th and the team 5th which is shy of their customary top three finishes but for a team that had not competed in two years it was a good showing.
Our Lady of Sorrows Track & Field Competed in the Combined Saint John the Apostle / Newark Diocese CYO Champs
In the largest meet of the season and, by far, the hottest day of the year, OLS was not a contender but gave supporters reason to hope in a year or so. The team finished fifth among the ten scoring CYO teams but was less successful in the open division against all teams.
The CYO’s 1600 meter runs opened with promise as Fiona Lowe, Gianluca Ravano and Robert Lynch, all third-graders, took on the 3rd & 4th grades with Fiona finishing a surprising 2nd for the girls and Gianluca, 6thfor the boys. Seventh graders, Nora D’Andrea and Millie Williams, took 5th and 6th in the Girls’ 7th & 8th race while Joe Schmidt, another seventh grader, scored a 6th place point in the boys’ race. He missed breaking 6:00 by less than a second. The 800 meter runs were open to all schools and Anouk Lomuscio ran 5th in the Girls 3rd & 4th race while Maudie Grace Lomuscio placed 4th in the Girls’ 7th & 8th race.
The 400 meter runs were open to all schools and OLS flexed some muscle with Miguel Aylward crushing the Boys’ 3rd & 4th field in 1:15.2 for the first of his three gold medals. Griffin McShane, also, ran a strong race. Hunter Williams came from an obscure heat to place 4th for the girls. Sean Navin scored a third in the Boys’ 5th & 6th and Nora D’Andrea grabbed a 6th in her first attempt in the 7th & 8th race for girls. The CYO 200 meter dashes ran a similar pattern with Miguel Aylward cruising to first, Hunter claiming 5th, Sean grabbing 3rd and Isabel Sabnekar running 3rd after being shut out of the 7th & 8th 400 meters. Zoey Rooplal also competed.
The CYO 100 meter dashes produced a few positive results for OLS. James Bautista – Turpin grabbed a solid 2nd for the 3rd & 4th Boys while fifth-grader, Xander Russo scored a 6th in the 5th & 6th Boys race. It was his first race in three weeks due to an injury. Sam Ardayfio had a bad start which put him out of contention. Seventh grader, Christina Paul ran her best time of the season while Madison Noesner made a solid effort in her first race in several weeks.
The field events provide a wealth of points. Starting with the Shot, Miguel Aylward (27’ 10”) and Anthony Destro placed 1st and 6th for the 3rd & 4th boys and Anouk Lomuscio won the girls’ event. Lorenzo Tomasso placed 6th in the 5th & 6th event while Maudie Grace Lomuscio and Nia Pryor picked up 4th and 5th in the Girls’ 7th & 8th. Seventh graders, Brendan[R1] McKeon and Joe Schmidt scored 4th and 6th for the boys.
The Long Jump provided two surprises. Sixth grader, Sean Navin, in his first competition, placed 3rdand Isabel Sabnekar was 2nd in the CYO 7th & 8th grade event. They are OLS’ only jumpers!
Finally, the TurboJav produced some interesting results with Sloane Donahue placing 6th in the Girls’ 3rd & 4th and Gianluca Ravano 4th for the boys. Dahlila Henry scored 6th for the Girls’ 5th & 6th and Carlos Checo 5th for the boys. Millie Williams came back to take a 5th and Tai Gousse (86’ 8”), a 2nd and Joe Schmidt, a 4th at the 7th & 8th grade level. Christopher Schmidt also competed in the 5th & 6th event.
Unfortunately, OLS’ team standings plummeted when they could field a team in any of the six relays.
The next and final meet will be the Kids 4 Kids Relays.
OLS Track Opens at Saint Cassian Invitational -May 1- Hurrell Field
The small, inexperienced track team from Our Lady of Sorrows took to the field for the first time in two years and while the results may not have been all they had hoped, they were very promising. More than half the team had never seen a track before!
After a rough opening in the 7th & 8th grades 1600 meter races, Christopher Schmidt took advantage of a fluke and won the Boys 5th & 6th race while Anouk Lomuscio took second in the Girls 3rd & 4th race. The 800 meters saw increased success with newcomers Nora D’Andrea and Millie Williams scoring fourth and fifth in the Girls 7th & 8th race and Sean Navin taking second in the Boys 5th & 6th race. Gianluca Ravanno grabbed 3rd in the Boys 3rd & 4th grade division.
The sprints are where OLS shone, starting with the 400 meters. Isabel Sabnekar and Zoey Rooplal placed 3rd and 5th in the Girls 7th & 8th division before Sean Navin blew out the field in winning the Boys 5th & 6th. Sloane Donahue went out very fast and held on to take 3rd in the 3rd & 4th girls’ race. The 2nd grade and Under races were even more successful as Izzie Williams took third in the girls’ race and Caleb Dean and Alessandro teamed up to take first and third for the boys!
The surge continued in the 200 meters boys’ races with 7th grader Tai Gousse grabbing fifth, Xander Russo, second in the 5th & 6th and James Bautista- Turpin, second in the 3rd & 4th. The results of the boys’ 100 meters saw the same faces with Xander winning the 5th & 6th and James, the 3rd & 4th races. These boys had never raced before!
OLS is much more than running and they proved it in the field events. In the TurboJav, Tai Gousse and Joe Schmidt opened the 7th & 8th grade event with second and fourth. Sloane Donahue placed again in the 3rd& 4th girls’ event while Allessandro Ravanno and Caleb Dean placed second and third in the 2nd Grade & Under contest. Anouk Lomuscio was the surprise winner of the Girls’ 3rd & 4th Shot. The boys’ shot saw Brendan McKeown take an equally surprising second in the 7th & 8th grade event, Lorenzo Tomasso took fifth in the 5th & 6th and Anthony Destro and Griffin McShane placed third and fifth in the 3rd & 4th grade event.
The relays completed the day. Isabel Sabnekar, Millie Williams, Nora D’Andrea and Maudie Grace placed fourth in a tight 7th & 8th Girls’ race while the team of Alfonso Dunmeyer, Yai Gousse, Joe Schmidt and Brendan McKeown also took 4th for the boys. In the 5th & 6th Boys’ race Sean Navin, Xander Russo, Lorenzo Tomasso and Christopher Schmidt took gold, comfortably. Anouk Lomuscio, Izzie Williams, Sloane Donahue and Madison Noesner took 3rd in the Girls’ 3rd & 4th Medley while James Caleb Dean, Griffin and Gianluca Ravano finished 4th for the boys.
Not everyone scored but Rafael Dunmeyer, Delilah Henry, Sam Ardayfio, Robert and Caleb Lynch, Luca Destro, Carter Paul and Oivia Lie showed that better days are coming soon!
The team travels to Roselle Catholic High next week to compete in the 22nd Annual Kids 4 Kids meet for the benefit of the Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children.
